On this day, armored tanks and military helicopters attacked the Presidential Palace in Kabul, marking the first coup against the country’s first republican system. The overthrow resulted in the death of Daoud Khan and 18 members of his family, paving the way for the People’s Democratic Party to seize power in Afghanistan.
