Unidentified gunmen shot dead Mawlana Mohammad Idris, a religious scholar, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday, a media report said.

Police said two officers assigned to provide him security were also injured in the attack.

Security officials confirmed that the attackers fled the scene. Police later arrived and launched a search operation in the area and nearby localities to arrest those responsible.

According to the report, Idris had recently praised Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, in a speech, which drew criticism both domestically and internationally.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
