The police in Pakistan have stated that among nearly a thousand protesters arrested over the past three days in Islamabad, the capital of the country, 19 are Afghan migrants.
Sayed Ali Nasir Rizvi, the Islamabad police chief, said in a press conference on Thursday, December 7, that during the extensive operation against the protesters, non-lethal equipment was used.
Thousands of supporters of Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, recently attempted to organize large protests in Islamabad. Yesterday, the protesters managed to break through the security cordon in the city and clashed with Pakistan’s security forces.
The Ministry of Interior of Pakistan announced late last night that they had launched a large-scale operation against the protesters and ended the demonstrations.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party also confirmed this news and posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the protests had ended.
According to the party, six people were killed in the clashes yesterday, including four security personnel and two protesters.
The protesters were demanding the immediate release of Imran Khan from prison. Khan, who faces 150 legal cases, has been in prison for over a year.
