On Saturday, December 21, Karzai wrote on his X account: “The demand of girls for education is a legitimate and vital aspiration for a prosperous Afghanistan. Empowering the young generation, both girls and boys, is the only way to achieve self-sufficiency, escape poverty, and ensure progress and development in our society.”
Karzai’s statement comes as the ban on women and girls attending universities by the Taliban has now lasted two years.
Although the global community has consistently condemned the Taliban’s closure of educational institutions for women and girls, the group has not only ignored these calls but has also gone further by closing the last avenue for female education—medical institutes.
Karzai expressed hope that schools and universities for Afghan women and girls would reopen soon. However, such hope seems unattainable under the current Taliban regime.
