Hyder Bar, Deputy Director of the Women’s Section at Human Rights Watch, says in a video that human rights violations by the Taliban, especially in some shocking cases, are occurring. He states that confirming these incidents is very difficult due to fear of the Taliban and media censorship. He emphasizes that some of these incidents, such as torture, mistreatment, and the release of women under harsh and humiliating conditions, have been documented by Human Rights Watch.
Bar adds: “They force their families to provide their financial assets as a guarantee that women will not do anything in the future to upset the Taliban.”
At the same time, Hyder Bar has announced the beginning of efforts to recognize “gender apartheid” in Afghanistan. This includes the prohibition of education, work, study, detention, torture, and sexual harassment of women.
The annual U.S. Government Human Rights Report, recently released, paints a very bleak picture of the current situation in Afghanistan. The report indicates that some women prisoners have been sexually assaulted and become pregnant after their release.
However, Taliban officials have rejected this report, claiming that the rights of the people of Afghanistan have improved based on Sharia law.
